Fertility and the Diet

Are you thinking of starting a family? Or are you struggling to conceive? Whilst many are familiar with common issues around fertility, have you considered the impact your diet can have on your fertility? Remember the old saying, ‘you are what you eat’, and this is particularly true when it comes to fertility.

Here I will discuss some simple lifestyle changes that you can adopt, which will aid your journey in starting a family. These tips apply to men as well as women.

Where to begin?

There are many steps couples can take to increase their chances of starting a family, and the first steps are through:

  • Detoxification
  • Intaking the correct nutrients

If you’re planning on starting a family in the next few years then cleaning up your body is the best preparatory strategy. Our bodies’ detoxification abilities weren’t meant for the amount and array of toxins we’re exposed to these days. For this tailored approach, please contact me to discuss a programme that will work for you.

If you’re at the stage where you’re ready to start a family, then being mindful of what you’re exposed to and what you’re consuming by means of food, drinks and skincare products is a must. The following should be avoided to enable your body to begin the natural process of detoxing:

  • trans-fats (margarine, processed foods, fried food)
  • alcohol
  • caffeine should be kept to a minimum
  • synthetic chemicals (e.g. artificial sweeteners, drinking water from plastic bottles)
  • sprouted (green) potatoes
  • raw eggs, poultry, seafood & sushi
  • paste, soft cheese, blue cheese

Other ways to ensure a clean diet is to:

  • drink filtered water
  • avoid your intolerances and allergies
  • lightly steam or roast your food when cooking
  • use oils such as olive, oil, butter, ghee and coconut oil for cooking and cold pressed oils for drizzling
  • eat plenty of clean and organic fruit and vegetables
  • choose grass fed organic meats
  • eat oily wild caught fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines

Intaking the correct nutrients

Diet provides the basic nutrients needed for fertility. We don’t always receive all of the necessary nutrients from food therefore it is imperative that we choose nutrients wisely. It’s worth nothing too that being on the contraceptive pill can mean that women become deficient in key nutrients for fertility. Here are some of the nutrients that are recommended to support fertility:

Women
Folic Acid & B Vitamins
Vitamins A, D, E
Magnesium, Zinc, Iodine
Essential Fatty Acids Omega 3, Omega 6
Antioxidants
Men
Vitamins C, E, MTHF
Zinc, Selenium, Chromium
Essential Fatty Acids Omega 3, Omega 6
Amino Acids Arginine, Lysine
Herb Maca
