LIGHTBOX: Postcards from the Future
This year we’re celebrating our 50th Birthday and, to mark this very special occasion, we’re showcasing the work of local young artists!
We invited all children and young people in Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil to send themselves a postcard from an imagined future, half a century from now. We asked them to let their imaginations run wild: How will we travel? What will school look like? Where will we live? What will we eat?
We had an amazing 1200 submissions, and we were so excited to see such incredible talent.
We worked with an expert panel of judges to sift through all the submissions and make the difficult decision to choose the top three from each age group (5-8 years, 9-11 years and 12-16 years).
Then we asked for your help to pick your favourite from the final nine and we want to thank you for voting!
We’re delighted to present this artwork by your chosen winner, Anna Hughes. Speaking about the opportunity, Anna said:
“I wanted to create a bright, fun and happy image of a Wales without COVID. I had the idea of a screen being brought down over our world now and wiping out the virus.
“My mother works for the NHS and so I drew her in her scrubs pulling down the screen. I thought that if people were to see the image it would give them a sense of hope and bring some joy as we’ve all had a tough year.
“When I was little my grandfather lived on Market Road and used to take me to Chapter for cake. I never thought that my artwork would be displayed here one day. It’s unbelievable!”
We’re so impressed with the creativity of all the young people who submitted their art, that we don’t want this to be all about the final winner, so we’re pleased to say that you can also see all the submissions in an online exhibition here: www.postcardsfromthefuture.org.uk
